denton tx's rob buttrum's filth sounds like the logical progression throbbing gristle would have had if they didnt break up. brutal looping industrial rhythms, harsh pulses of synth death. one of my favorite projects going right now. developer is matthew reis cutting up every sound he can get his hands on into and audio collage of what the fuck is happening.

rav's scant is the hands down best hnw act going right now. its not just everything turned up to 11 and fighting for air boring ass hnw the majority of the scene is making right now. so much attention to detail, subltle shifts... if its possible for wall noise to be intricate, few can pull it off, and scant is one of them. ohio's developer have been shredding faces off with his particular brand of fast paced cut ups for the last few years, and in the words of paranoid time's pat yankee, is "peaking right now".

uk's justin wiggins is the man behind roadside picnic, a fairly prolific project thats making some headway in the international scene. both tracks use electro-acoustic techniques,  concret sounds, minimal electronics, and an excellent use of timing and space to create enveloping other worlds.  

                          fact080 developer group - "dayton / cleveland board meetings" c10
two short live documents of meetings of the developer group. matthew reis of developer live edits multiple other players input like the puppet master to a bunch of evil marionettes. various members of the board were on hand in dayton for a new years meeting (peter, jay, justin, roam, jonathan, matthew, brittney, jml, james and ben) and in cleveland for a scrap metal summit (nate, roman, mitch, paul, matthew, wyatt, jack and jake.).




                                              fact075 jason zeh / developer - "split" c30

jason zeh takes cassette tapes to a whole new level. from the first time we witnessed zeh performe live, we have been in awe of his work.  hours and hours of pre production work go into every tiny detail of every piece he performs/records. releasing records and tapes this year on labels such as c.i.p., chondritic sound, banned productions, and hanson (later this year), all of which were the result of literally years of work. a stunning piece of droning hiss and hum. developer shows us another side of his work with this track, opening with a lush synth tone, rhythm and a slow motion take on his typically lightning speed cut up style. the sounds getting cut in for slightly longer stretches and definitely sparser over the pulsing tone.

                                               fact070 patio slang - "surface politics" c60
patio slang is the duo of bryan day on homemade instruments and radio transceivers, and toyohiro okazaki on electronics. recorded in 2012 in various spots while on tour in japan, these pieces go from near inaudible to ear crushing sometimes one track. bryan's set up of homemade gear sounds as impressive as it looks, okazaki's electronics slither in and out of the various plunks and tings weaving an improvised blanket of clatter and hiss.

yellow springs ohio's math rock band hyrrokkin have been killing it live all over the u.s. for a few years now, this year all that hard work paid off and they released their first lp/cd on sickroom records. this is a re-issue of the ep they sold on tour. slightly rougher, definitely rawer demo recordings of some of the songs off the new lp. members of this band spent time in footbinder, matta gawa, kuan, william hooker's trio, and the greg ginn band, if that gives you any indication of the whirlwind time signatures and flurry of notes that litter this cassette tape.

orgasmic response unit is the unified work of the brothers tandy. luke, also know as being, who runs the skeleton dust label and nate aka diaphragmatic who runs the foxhole atheism label beat the shit out of ever thing metal in site in the most menacing, violent and yet extremely focused use of metal abuse in the u.s. noise scene going right now. you could argue, but you'd be wrong. developer is the no sound is innocent cut up harsh noise solo effort of matthew reis. gysin's cut up techniques and musique-concrete tactics taken up a notch. definitely rolling in the upper eshelon of u.s. cut up artist.

bass player split. matt "phil"goodrich of buffolo ny's power violence/grinders band water torture and victims of circumstance's hnw by way of noisecore solo effort deceiver delivers pitch shifted vocals, brutal low end, and fucking lasers! nate powell of cincinnati doomers impia and grinders forced opinion's creepy as shit clavicula salomonis brings more brutal low end, misused hydraulics, and some ncie hollow scraping sounds. good and creepy. two of the best people i know.




                                  fact044 obsessive thought patterns - "spoken eclipse" c60
this is the second in the dayton ohio archive series. obsessive thought patterns was the noise project of terry means, a sort of dayton legend/godfather. having served times in headswim, an industrial band in the 80's, crust/hardcore bands pawn and 23rd chapter in the 90s,  sludge/doomers drip feeder in the early 00's and currently jaming with half of footbinder, and worked at one of the areas best record stores for extreme music, he definitely helped shape a few minds. in 1996 he gave me a copy of this tape. everything imaginable source sounds collaged onto tape and brutalized with an effects chain. this definitely still holds up

potier. is becoming a household name amongst u.s. harsh heads. following in the footsteps of foxhole atheism and jungle crunk, factotum becomes the 3rd dayton label to release a tape for this german born canadian and there is a reason. using some very tried and true methods; metal, contact mics, feedback, distortion, potier. brings something else to the table, an intense focused tension that has him quickly sitting comfortably on any shelf with the likes of orgasmic response unit, hostage pageant, eid, and the like.

3 newest factotum tapes. finally getting caught back up after a long hard year of dealing with cancer with my father. since he beat the big c, life has been a whirlwind of fests and tours and short runs of tapes for these various fests and tours, im just now getting a lot of this stuff "officially" released. at some point, i"ll have to post the stuff that slipped thru the crack and went oop before it was ever really  released. so far this year has shown no signs of slowing down either. toured to and played sux by sux west, getting ready to tour to and play end tymes festival, a little bit of time to recover and catch up on things, then tour to and play summer scum again this year. so im trying to stay on top of the catch up process and moving forward with the newest releases. hope all is well with all of you. and thanks for all of your support. couldn't do this without you.

4th developer full length on factotum. stretching out the time a bit more on this one. field recordings, percussion, electronics, found sounds, and the like are still collaged and further cut up. but sounds and events seem to settle in for longer stretches. sounds a bit more composed and less on the fly free improv tape collage. these were originally made for summer scum fest in buffalo and for milwaukee noise fest... the cover is slightly different than the fest edition.

dayton ohio trio of justin lakes (pusdrainer, breached hull, etc.), matthew reis (developer, teeth collection, etc) and britney blackwood (chanteplure, coffin mouth). grim vibes from the creep merchants that are muck. tape loops, and metal scrap and clang over a bed of low end electronics and synth. much harsher than the double tape. a small number of these were available for muck's fall tour in 2012. the double tape + zine,  cdr, and original 10 or so copies of this were all sold out on tour or shortly there after. all may be re-issued on other labels eventually. this c40 gets a second run from factotum. be on the look out for us at summer scum this year, and a short tour with fervour noir right after. releases coming soon on depravity, new forces, foxhole atheism and the always amazing live bait.

"it's really great, nothing happens" - overheard description of an unsemble performance. an entirely acoustic (aside from the build in speakers of zeh's shoebox tape decks) group of ohio sound artist working on group free improv that focuses on quiet. cincinnati's jon lorenz and john rich (sax and clarinet) of wasteland jazz unit and public housing,  columbus' ryan jewell (snare, percussion), bowling green's jason zeh (tape manipulation),  and dayton's matthew reis (banjo, percussion) of developer & teeth collection. two side long live sets, one with the whole group, one a trio of lorenz, jewell, and reis.

buffalo power violence duo water torture semi recently released a split 7" with australian noisy grind duo thedowngoing for a north american tour. water torture gave the un mixed un cut raw studio tracks from their side to developer to "remix". the result sounds more like fast paced 90's japanease harsh noise.

         been a minute, huh? yeah as usual, what was meant to be several batches of releases throughout the summer and into fall, is ending up as two larger batches in the spring and the 2nd will follow by summer. with more to (hopefully quickly) follow.
          all of these tapes have been in various stages of completion for quite some time... all artists have had their copies for awhile, and some of them were available at various fests and on tours. the artists have been on since summer of last year, some from this batch and the next. i'm actually fairly low on copies of a few of these, and there were a few things that went out of print before they got posted. they will eventually be posted just to give them their proper place the annals of factotum history, er whatever... so here is the first half....

another dayton split. j.e.barajas' (foresight, authority, okto media) new project mass comm takes up where foresight left off. using only guitar as source for this recording, jeb makes it impossible to tell. a heavy dose of electronics and audio collage, transforming the original into a fast racket. on the other side, another dose of improv tape collage from developer. electronics, found sounds, field recordings and lots and lots of percussion are all on the chopping block. no sound is innocent with either of these artists.

aidsblood is dayton's no-wave sludge free improv noise rock super group. twin bass, twin drum, and a 4-stringed guitar for a heavy dose of what the fuck. public housing is cincinnati's no-fi noise rock darlings. the wasteland jazz unit sax-men on dual guitar, filled out by a drummer who plays on trash, and a lady with a table full of electronics.

  two sidelong tracks of dynamic electro-acoustic works from this young mansfeild, ohio composer. processing sounds and collaging them in the most organic sounding of ways, ordinary objects become a world of mystery. super stoked to be releasing something for this guy fairly early in his career, really look foward to watching his progression from here. this sounds like early 20th century composer work, so i can only imagine where he's gonna go.

energetic and brutal free jazz from this french trio. jean-luc guionnet - alto sax, will guthrie - drums, and clayton thomas - double bass. two scorching side long live tracks recorded in paris and lyons that seriously rip. self proclaimed minimal maximal terror jazz, and its for good reason. outside of the ames room these guys have covered everything from electro-acoustic composition and free improv to rock, and jazz composition. not to mention having worked with the likes of peter brotzmann, alex dorner, andy moor, keith rowe, philip samartzis, and jerome noetinger to name just a few.

if you had a chance to catch being live this year, you may have witnessed a version of this set. stereo static and crackle, two channels with the same set up, panned hard, then intricately tweaked with extreme precision. in the stereo spectrum even the slightest changes seem like glacial shifts to the listener on a good system. the effects of the stereo field can be felt on the flip side as well. developer delivers a miasmic sound flurry of layered harsh noise, fast paced cut ups, found sound and field recordings. "headphones for maximum psychosis."

very honored to be releasing a tape for mr anthony saunders, who is such a perfectionist, its hard to actually get material from him... i did a short tour with him, jason zeh and nicolas ceparski back in 2009, and thats when talks of this tape first started. this is fantastic dymanic harsh noise made using  a fairly small string of effects and metal.  simple set up, complex results. i am completely ok with how long it took to get this out, well worth the wait for material this good.

aperiodic began in 1997 in dayton ohio. two of the members having since moved to other cities. all have been in and out of various bands; enon, a ten o'clock scholar, lab partners, and currently the exponential, and holy fuck. and through it all, aperiodic. intense free improvisation with elements of free jazz, no-wave, 90's noise rock, and even musique-concret. this created using traditional rock instruments drums and electric guitar with effects, as well as eastern instruments the gu gin, rudar veena, and surbahar.
