3 newest factotum tapes. finally getting caught back up after a long hard year of dealing with cancer with my father. since he beat the big c, life has been a whirlwind of fests and tours and short runs of tapes for these various fests and tours, im just now getting a lot of this stuff "officially" released. at some point, i"ll have to post the stuff that slipped thru the crack and went oop before it was ever really  released. so far this year has shown no signs of slowing down either. toured to and played sux by sux west, getting ready to tour to and play end tymes festival, a little bit of time to recover and catch up on things, then tour to and play summer scum again this year. so im trying to stay on top of the catch up process and moving forward with the newest releases. hope all is well with all of you. and thanks for all of your support. couldn't do this without you.

4th developer full length on factotum. stretching out the time a bit more on this one. field recordings, percussion, electronics, found sounds, and the like are still collaged and further cut up. but sounds and events seem to settle in for longer stretches. sounds a bit more composed and less on the fly free improv tape collage. these were originally made for summer scum fest in buffalo and for milwaukee noise fest... the cover is slightly different than the fest edition.

dayton ohio trio of justin lakes (pusdrainer, breached hull, etc.), matthew reis (developer, teeth collection, etc) and britney blackwood (chanteplure, coffin mouth). grim vibes from the creep merchants that are muck. tape loops, and metal scrap and clang over a bed of low end electronics and synth. much harsher than the double tape. a small number of these were available for muck's fall tour in 2012. the double tape + zine,  cdr, and original 10 or so copies of this were all sold out on tour or shortly there after. all may be re-issued on other labels eventually. this c40 gets a second run from factotum. be on the look out for us at summer scum this year, and a short tour with fervour noir right after. releases coming soon on depravity, new forces, foxhole atheism and the always amazing live bait.

"it's really great, nothing happens" - overheard description of an unsemble performance. an entirely acoustic (aside from the build in speakers of zeh's shoebox tape decks) group of ohio sound artist working on group free improv that focuses on quiet. cincinnati's jon lorenz and john rich (sax and clarinet) of wasteland jazz unit and public housing,  columbus' ryan jewell (snare, percussion), bowling green's jason zeh (tape manipulation),  and dayton's matthew reis (banjo, percussion) of developer & teeth collection. two side long live sets, one with the whole group, one a trio of lorenz, jewell, and reis.

         been a minute, huh? yeah as usual, what was meant to be several batches of releases throughout the summer and into fall, is ending up as two larger batches in the spring and the 2nd will follow by summer. with more to (hopefully quickly) follow.
          all of these tapes have been in various stages of completion for quite some time... all artists have had their copies for awhile, and some of them were available at various fests and on tours. the artists have been on since summer of last year, some from this batch and the next. i'm actually fairly low on copies of a few of these, and there were a few things that went out of print before they got posted. they will eventually be posted just to give them their proper place the annals of factotum history, er whatever... so here is the first half....

another dayton split. j.e.barajas' (foresight, authority, okto media) new project mass comm takes up where foresight left off. using only guitar as source for this recording, jeb makes it impossible to tell. a heavy dose of electronics and audio collage, transforming the original into a fast racket. on the other side, another dose of improv tape collage from developer. electronics, found sounds, field recordings and lots and lots of percussion are all on the chopping block. no sound is innocent with either of these artists.

aidsblood is dayton's no-wave sludge free improv noise rock super group. twin bass, twin drum, and a 4-stringed guitar for a heavy dose of what the fuck. public housing is cincinnati's no-fi noise rock darlings. the wasteland jazz unit sax-men on dual guitar, filled out by a drummer who plays on trash, and a lady with a table full of electronics.

  two sidelong tracks of dynamic electro-acoustic works from this young mansfeild, ohio composer. processing sounds and collaging them in the most organic sounding of ways, ordinary objects become a world of mystery. super stoked to be releasing something for this guy fairly early in his career, really look foward to watching his progression from here. this sounds like early 20th century composer work, so i can only imagine where he's gonna go.

energetic and brutal free jazz from this french trio. jean-luc guionnet - alto sax, will guthrie - drums, and clayton thomas - double bass. two scorching side long live tracks recorded in paris and lyons that seriously rip. self proclaimed minimal maximal terror jazz, and its for good reason. outside of the ames room these guys have covered everything from electro-acoustic composition and free improv to rock, and jazz composition. not to mention having worked with the likes of peter brotzmann, alex dorner, andy moor, keith rowe, philip samartzis, and jerome noetinger to name just a few.

if you had a chance to catch being live this year, you may have witnessed a version of this set. stereo static and crackle, two channels with the same set up, panned hard, then intricately tweaked with extreme precision. in the stereo spectrum even the slightest changes seem like glacial shifts to the listener on a good system. the effects of the stereo field can be felt on the flip side as well. developer delivers a miasmic sound flurry of layered harsh noise, fast paced cut ups, found sound and field recordings. "headphones for maximum psychosis."

very honored to be releasing a tape for mr anthony saunders, who is such a perfectionist, its hard to actually get material from him... i did a short tour with him, jason zeh and nicolas ceparski back in 2009, and thats when talks of this tape first started. this is fantastic dymanic harsh noise made using  a fairly small string of effects and metal.  simple set up, complex results. i am completely ok with how long it took to get this out, well worth the wait for material this good.

aperiodic began in 1997 in dayton ohio. two of the members having since moved to other cities. all have been in and out of various bands; enon, a ten o'clock scholar, lab partners, and currently the exponential, and holy fuck. and through it all, aperiodic. intense free improvisation with elements of free jazz, no-wave, 90's noise rock, and even musique-concret. this created using traditional rock instruments drums and electric guitar with effects, as well as eastern instruments the gu gin, rudar veena, and surbahar.

Developer – OOBR004 (C30, Out-Of-Body Records)

Developer is Matthew Reis, who’s also behind the noise project Teeth Collection. As you can see, Developer’s not really into naming his works (most of his other releases are simply the tape number), but his harsh noise on OOBR004 is significantly more complex than this. The sources of the sounds alternate immensely, and often found sounds and samples make their way into the mix during the quieter times before calamity strikes.
The harsh noise on this cassette is often cut-up, with a nice rough sound that often jumps from different textures quickly. It’s all very fast-paced and chaotic, but with these jumps often comes certain ambient touches that add field recordings, whether it be water running or the gritty pounding of drums. There are also portions of silence, stop-starts that add an interesting element to Developer’s work. Some of the harsh noise sounds similar to what other cut-up artists have been doing, but Developer often allows certain samples to loop for a little while before continuing on.
The most important part of OOBR004 is that it knows what samples are worth looping. When Developer falls into these bits of stasis, they’re rhythmic sections that are nicely nuanced, with a little variety within them. They’re not quite drones, and that means that along with the harsh spits and sputters of the feedback and static, there’s also just a little bit of staccato and melody that is quite pleasing. It’s an interesting project, one that will often change from release to release depending on the sound samples and the context that Developer would like to create.
